In an attempt to persuade the diehard You-Must-Believe-the-Earth-Is-4,000 Years-Old crowd, Dr. John Walton asks this question: what sort of origin story is the book of Genesis trying to tell?
Is it telling the story of a house or a home?
If it's the story of a house, then factual data regarding materials used, the date it was built, who did the work, and the actual blueprints would be all you need.
But if it's telling a story of how a home came to be, none of that matters to any great extent.
Instead, you'd expect to hear about the various individuals in the house and their relationships to each other along with any significant milestones in the life of that family.
If we read Genesis as a "house story", we overlook the main thrust of the history and miss the point entirely.
