DANGEROUS

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.

In reflecting on 2 Timothy 2:7, I was reminded of this quote from famous Christian missionary, Jim Elliot:

"We are so utterly ordinary, so commonplace, while we profess to know a Power the Twentieth Century does not reckon with. But we are “harmless,” and therefore unharmed. . . . We are “sideliners” — coaching and criticizing the real wrestlers while content to sit by and leave the enemies of God unchallenged. The world cannot hate us, we are too much like its own. Oh that God would make us dangerous!"

Elliot was martyred in Ecuador in the 1950s. If you are not familiar with his story, I highly recommend reading Shadow of the Almighty: the Life and Testament of Jim Elliot, a collection of his writings from journals and letters compiled by his wife, Elizabeth, after his death at the hands of the Auca Indians.

Elliot's story is amazing. He and his wife were anything but timid.
